2024 Outstanding Educational Performance Awards: Highlighting Arkansas Schools Demonstrating High Student Growth

This report is the OEP awards for the 2023-24 academic year, highlighting the schools around the state where students are demonstrating the greatest academic growth based on the 2024 ATLAS assessments.

    Many of these schools have a very small student population, so only one or two students can “throw” the overall scores up or down. It seems that this study also doesn’t monitor the same group of students, so a different class of 10-12 students doesn’t necessarily indicate growth.

      Arkansas’s Growth Model is calculated at the student level, based on up to 4 years of a student’s prior test score history, so each student’s improvement over time is compared to other students with similar test score histories. One or two students who are demonstrating great growth will not have a large impact on overall growth, just like one or two students with terrible growth won’t have a large impact on the overall growth. We limit our rewards to schools that have at least 10 students with growth values. While we considered raising that minimum sample, we felt it was important to include as many schools as possible since Arkansas has many small rural schools, and small schools serving specific populations. If those schools are helping their students grow more than similar students in other schools, we feel they should be celebrated!
